Patient Preparation for Procedures

For our pet patients scheduled for surgery, dentistry, ultrasonography or any procedures requiring sedation, please arrive between 7:30 and 8:00 am the day of the procedure. Please do not feed after midnight the night before but water can be available up until the time of drop off.

Surgical or Dental Catheters

For some surgical procedures you may notice at pick up a shaved area on either the front or hind leg where an intravenous catheter was placed to administer sedation and provide fluid support to maintain blood pressure. If a bandage is in place at discharge, please remove the bandage by unwinding at home about 1/2 hour after arrival. Hair regrowth will take about 4 to 6 weeks and initially be slightly darker but will blend back to the color of the rest of the coat.

We implant intravenous catheters during some procedures to provide the safest anesthesia, minimize the amount of sedatives needed and provide immediate access to the bloodstream should any circumstances arise that warrant an immediate response. We have responded to your expectation for the safest method of anesthesia possible.

They positively alter our mental and physical state in healthful ways clearly documented in study after study. One researcher was asked if he was certain about his results. He stated his data was clear but then asked the interviewer to spell “dog” backwards. Pets are also powerful therapy aides for the treatment of depression, anger management and teaching empathy to the incarcerated. More...

Children and Pets
